I don’t think it is a common way to do that ANYWHERE in the world, is it? Everyone else who is not familiar with automatic doors probably would have tried to open it gently with the hands?!

First I see his clothes and think, “Oh, he’s not from around here.” Then afterwards there’s all kinds of similarly dressed people, so yes, he was from around there. He’s just a retard.
Apparently he thought the papers he had along might include door instructions…
I suppose he forgot how it worked (amnesia?), then paniced because he saw others walk through there earlier…
