I guess I just focused on the word “coma,” and my (potentially limited) understanding that coma implies a complete loss of consciousness (in other words, I read coma and thought “so, literally asleep at the wheel with no waking up”).
The idea that she was conscious and “temporarily brain-dead” makes a little more sense, especially with the concept of the car managing to remain in a mostly-straight trajectory.
