Like I said on FB: isn’t this the same excuse adulterer’s use when they cheat on their husband with another man?

    • Billy says:

That’s what I was thinking. To be fair, the excuse goes both ways.
But honey, I slipped and fell, good thing her Vj was there to catch me.

    It’s David Hasselhoff!

  3. DannyboyO1 says:

Wow. It’s like he doesn’t understand that changing his story doesn’t make him seem less guilty. Now he’s not only a coward, and a liar, as the coast guard has proven… now he wants to insult the intelligence of everyone on the planet. He couldn’t be trying harder to get whatever the maximum sentence is without attempting to rape the judge in the courtroom.

Or his real defense is that he’s so obviously unqualified that the blame should rest with the company that hired him. Sadly, that logic works… for civil cases only.

I suspect there’s not enough facepalm on the internet to convey my full disappointment on this.

  4. short1fry says:

Dannyboy’s comment is perfect but forgot ‘moron’. What is amazing is that this guy has a $480 million ship and moves in closer to the island so he can WAVE at a friend!!????!!!!

Is it a law or company policy as to the captain being off the ship last?

    • Bruce Bergman says:

Oh, it’s both Maritime and Italian law – The captain of the vessel is fully responsiible for the safety of the ship, passengers, and crew. Once he has all the passengers and crew off the ship safely, and has secured the ship against further damage as best he can, then he can grab the log-books and leave.

If the ship sinks out from under him and he ends up in the drink with the last people off, that’s okay. Finding him in a lifeboat wearing a “Minkman Schnoz Glasses” disguise trying to slink away is breaking the law big time.

I’ll bet he thought at least once about sneaking away, and find a nice little hidey-hole with no extradition treaties where he can live out his days…

      • bleicher says:

as far i know – it isnt actually a “maritime law” – more of “honor principle” you dont have to stay on the ship to the end, but if you dont, you are a disgrace to your guild.

  5. waggle237 says:

an italian who surrenders easily? well i never!
hey, did you hear about the new 5 gear italian tanks? they have one for forward and 4 for reverse!
why does the italian navy have glass bottom boats? so they could see the OLD italian navy!

Amercans. receive a single attack scoring 9k victims: complain for the rest of the century.

    • Union Jack Jackson says:

      say what again?

    • thehutch says:

Europeans? Bit of a generalisation there.

    • bleicher says:

US didnt participate in WWI – you cowards!

even in WWII, despite what your CallofDuty propaganda tells you – US had mostly sent money and goods over. the fighting was done by Europeans.

US was busy being ass-kicked by country 1/100 its size (Japan, in case you have not been to college yet – or wherever they teach you, US isn’t 107% of the planet) – and if you say, US did not get ass-raped by japan, so why are you still whining all over it for over half a century?

      • Made in Europe says:

bleicher, you should study this a bit more carefully too. They did take part in the last year of the first world war, alongside the British and French. The US isolation policy prevented them from direct involvement in the earlier stages of WWII, but when Japan attacked Pearl Harbour, and Germany, a Japanese ally, declared war on the USA, the game was set. The Japanese imperial forces was just as fanatical as the SS of Nazi Germany, but they were much more numerous, and if I recall this correctly, Soviet forces helped USA to beat them. I do however agree with you on the bit about the scale of violation of sovereignty.

      • TheNlgger says:

        Butthurt much?

      • fai says:

The US lost 500k people to WWII. Don’t dishonor our vets.

    • Untoxicated says:

Freds just butthurt because america has never won a war without outside help.

  7. Shin0bi272 says:

wait who are the 7% that voted it was acceptable? were those the crew members or something?

  8. dot says:

Clearly he was stupid for going in close to wave for a friend. And even though it was a rotten thing to do (as the captain) to abandon ship, at least he lived. Dishonorable or not, most people would choose to live and be prosecuted rather than to die.

I don’t think him leaving cost anyone else their life. It wasn’t like there weren’t enough lifeboats or he could have done anything to stop it from sinking once it started. His real error was the going in too close and causing the ship to sink in the first place. But once it started he couldn’t do anything about it, and though it is tradition to go down with the ship, I don’t think we can fault him for wanting to live (however cowardly it may be).

Just wanted to note that, as people seem to be getting on him for abandoning ship more than causing the crash in the first place.

  9. lolz says:

    back peddle faster moron

  10. The only thing that would have made this the excuse of the century is if the captain was wearing a dress and wig.

  11. Billy says:

My best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with the girl who said he was in the lifeboat so he could asses the damage. I guess it’s pretty serious.

  12. ElFuerte says:

    “I didn’t run, I fell.”

  13. Made in Europe says:

As commander and chief of the ship, Francisco Schettino is responsible for the well being of the passengers and crew, as well as the ship itself and everything that happens on it, so this act he puts on at the moment just shows his lack of respect for the survivors, the people who lost their lives and their families. And as people have pointed out, he shouldn’t been allowed to command such a vessel in the first place, as the lack of common sense and good judgment seems to be strong in this one.

  14. dissembly says:

    GILLIGAN!!!!!!!

  15. metallica rulz says:

what a miracle no bruises from falling into a lifeboat
